As the lead singer of Incubus, Brandon Boyd has shown for many years
that he is an ever-morphing artist who possesses an innate
accessibility. An insight into his raw honesty is explored and
displayed in his two previously released diary/journalistic books. In
2003, White Fluffy Clouds: Found Inspiration Moving Forward was
published, and followed by From The Murks of The Sultry Abyss in 2007.

His upcoming show entitled “Ectoplasm” is an examination of the relationship and correlation between art and spirit matter. Brandon cites artists Aubrey Beardsley, Egon Schiele, Robert Anton Wilson, and Helmut Newton as a few of the artists that have had a profound influence on his work. A portion of his previous work can be viewed at www.brandonboydbooks.com and the upcoming installation will unveil primarily new material.

Opened in April, 2006 Mr. Musichead is the first L.A. gallery devoted
exclusively to rock art, fine art, and photography by its musicians,
artists, photographers, and designers. It features album cover art,
poster art, and photography that chronicles rock and roll heritage
while interspersing and showcasing new artists with new points of
view. Owner and founder Sam Milgrom established himself in Detroit
for many years as a cutting edge music retailer and live concert venue
owner. A partner of the renowned Morrison Hotel gallery, Sam has now
set his sites specifically on the Los Angeles music/art scene.

Community Tee-Shirt Company Challenges Designers to Create Tees Based on the Concept of Democracy

Community-centric tee shirt company Threadless.com is getting into the spirit of this year’s elections, and creating its own Threadless Loves Democracy challenge. Designers everywhere will have the opportunity to get into the spirit of Vote ‘08 by creating tees based on the theme of Democracy.

Although the challenge does run in tandem with this year’s US elections, Threadless is looking for designs that have nothing to do with the sides in any specific election—US or otherwise. The challenge is all about the idea, the spirit, and the drive behind democracy; not about taking sides.

In the past, only one design is usually chosen in the end. This time, however, a special panel of judges including Jeff Staple of Staple Design, Carlos Segura of Segura, Inc, and Ross Zietz of Threadless will choose three designs to succeed. Other cabinet members for the challenge include Sappi Fine Paper, Rock the Vote, Jones Soda, and Jeff Howe’s latest book, Crowdsourcing.

“Threadless Loves” challenges give designers an opportunity to flex their skills and design to a particular challenge. Challenges are sponsored and supported by companies relevant to the idea. Previous “Loves” partners include Hot Chip, Moby, MTV’s Human Giant, and the Lomographic Society International.

Threadless and its partners are giving the creators of the chosen designs a prize package better than the White House. Chosen designs will be printed as Threadless tees and Threadless Prints on premium Sappi McCoy paper, and will also be used in a nationwide promotion for Sappi Fine Paper. Designers will also receive goodies including a Gocco P5 Silk Screening Kit, a signed copy of Crowdsourcing, a $250 Apple Store gift card, gift certificates to Screwball Press, free Crown Business Books, and the chosen designs will be available on approximately 1,000 cases (each) of bottles for purchase on Jones Soda’s campaigncola.com site. As always, designers will also receive a $500 Threadless gift certificate, $2,000 in cash, and an extra $500 in cash for being made into a Print!

Deadline for entries is August 14, 2008. For more info on the design challenge and all its partners, hit the links below:
